During their visit on December 10, 2023, the Bennett team from Australia had the opportunity to visit the Oromia Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (OCFCU). The visit encompassed various aspects related to coffee farming, and processing within the cooperative and strengthened future business with OCFCU.
The team observed the coffee farming practices carried out by the cooperative, including the collection of coffee cherries and the subsequent processing for washed preparation. They also witnessed the entire process from collection to storage at the cooperative level.

Additionally, the team learned about the Cook-stove distribution project, which aims to provide efficient cook-stoves to coffee farmers. Discussions were held with the cooperatives regarding the market and its dynamics. Furthermore, the team was introduced to the digital payment system and other activities facilitated by Doqo, Negele Gorbitu, and Guwanga Cooperatives.

The primary focus of the visit was to explore the new coffee harvest at each cooperative. Mr. Shote Dereje, OCFCU Coffee quality control division head, provided detailed information on the meticulous preparation of high-quality standard coffee. He emphasized that the Union is committed to presenting exceptional coffee to the global market, including specialty coffee in micro-lots. Mr. Zergaw Asefa , Senior expert in cooperative Support team, explained their efforts to support each cooperative in achieving such high performance.

The Bennett team, represented by Georgia and Julian, expressed their astonishment at what they witnessed in the Oromia Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union. They mentioned that they typically source coffee from various countries worldwide, with an annual quantity of approximately 600 containers. Inspired by their visit, they expressed their intention to explore the possibility of purchasing specialty coffee from OCFCU.

Mr. Dejene Dadi, the General Manager of OCFCU, led the team and provided detailed information about the Union’s activities across all cooperatives. He highlighted the marketing efforts, climate change initiatives, and the strategic plan aimed at improving the livelihoods of coffee farmers.
Overall, the visit left a positive impression on the Bennett team, showcasing the dedication and commitment of OCFCU to producing high-quality coffee and making a positive impact in the lives of coffee farmers.
